ABOUT
ANGELA
JACKSON

I write about the gap between the life we think we’re meant to want and the one we actually find ourselves living.
I’m a novelist, writer and performer based in Edinburgh. My work moves between fiction, live performance, comedy, audio and research — not as separate careers, but as different ways of getting at the same questions.
My first novel, The Emergence of Judy Taylor, won the Edinburgh International Book Festival First Book Award. My second, The Darlings, grew partly through live monologues: putting characters in front of an audience and discovering what happened when the words had to breathe.
ON THE PAGE · IN THE ROOM
Comedy matters to me because it changes what an audience can bear to hear.
LIVE WORK
I’ve written and performed work that brings together storytelling, music, psychology, philosophy and comedy, including A Hundred Thousand Heartbeats and When Harry Met Sally Met Julie Met Jazz Met Kierkegaard Met Jung Met Lovely Johnny Marr.
RESEARCH
My current doctoral research explores comedy drama in British television series, with submission planned for spring 2027. The recurring question underneath it is one that runs through much of my creative work too: what happens when comedy sits beside pain?
NOW
RIPE
THINGS
I’m currently writing a new novel, Ripe Things.
